Xanaé Bowe ^^ A Parallel(es) Life. 2021, 105 min Film Screening and discussion

July 7, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

InternationaI spaces and pIaces of freedom and ideas in reaI Iife.

This is a dive into the French Underground through its bookshops and, by extension, what is spread there. From 1972 till today, several generations of seekers have spent time in the Parallèles bookshop. It all took root in May 68 and has sowed good seeds, the fruit which is still being reaped today.

The film presents the narrative arc of a French counter-culture epic, stretching from the late 50s prehistory involving the first committed bookshops up to the new booksellers who have inherited this libertarian state of mind. It is a tribute to insider places, and is haunted by leading characters whose singularity is embodied in its free press, its publications, its fanzines and its tapes.

Or: how to lead a Parallel(es) life and relay thoughts and an aesthetic that is beyond the mainstream?

A Parallel(es) Life is here to help you time-travel in an invigorating way from the 70s up to today. It reproduces a French map, one filled with alternative places, the first Punk fiefdoms and trailblazing publishers of US comics.

These places are a different and unseen way of living in the city, working to create bridges between people and places.

A way of making the space more dynamic, even more dynamite.

Xanaé Bove has directed 10 short films at the edge of fiction and experimental, 2 documentaries about the underground French scene. She is also a fiIm journalist for Culturopoing website and investigates for Gonzaï magazine. She sings and writes lyrics in the band, The Late Bloomers.
