This lecture argues that we need to collectively raise awareness of the deeply wounded condition of the planet humans call home. Living with a wounded planet requires to end the death-making conditions caused by ontologies of property, rampant extraction and accelerating exploitation. Diagnosing that the absence of public imaginaries of care has led to a profound lack of feeling-and-thinking the interdependencies and intervulnerabilities of all planetary beings, feminist recovery insists that a recovery from the wounds caused by colonial capitalist patriarchal violence will only be possible if these wounds, and what causes them, are felt, seen, diagnosed, and cared for. Feminist recovery, across activism, art, poetry, policy, politics, research and theory, works with practices of refusing, resisting, curing and healing and is rooted in care feminism.
Elke Krasny is Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Her scholarship addresses care and social reproduction, social and ecological justice, transnational feminisms and practices of emancipation as well as memory work and politics of commemoration in contemporary art, architecture, urbanism, curatorial practice and art education. The volume Curating with Care, edited with Lara Perry, brings together transnational perspectives on curating with care written in relation to anticolonial, social, and ecological struggles. The Yasmeen Lari. Architecture for the Future, edited with Angelika Fitz and Marvi Mazhar, offers a critical introduction to Yasmeen’s trajectory from exemplary modernist architect to zero carbon revolutionary. Krasny’s 2023 book Living with an Infected Planet. Covid-19, Feminism, and the Global Frontline of Care develops a feminist perspective on the rhetoric of war and the realities of care in pandemic times and examines feminist recovery plans for building futures otherwise.
