In 2018, climate science, through one of its most conservative but also most widely accepted institutions, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, sent out its most powerful message yet: we need a radical change in human civilization as we know it in the next 12 years, by 2030, to have a chance of avoiding global warming of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Six years on and five years since our last debate at the Avtonomi Akadimia entitled “From Climate Change, to Climate Chance”, we are right at the halfway point. This time we will try to trace what we have done, what we have not done, what state we are in at the moment, what the climate models predict for the future, what we can do, based on scientific facts and figures, without embellishments, without niceties, but also without panic.
