There is a pressure behind the eyes of the “art world”. It is an organism with its own reason for being, a virus subverting its host’s replicating mechanisms so as to spread its agenda. Deploying magical tactics of resonance, of effect via distance, it relentlessly burns paths through sustenance/conservation (ζωή), towards life (βίος). It carves out spaces where can experience the ecstatic transformation of what we can be to each other and do for each other. It generates value that circulates within and between communities, and it refuses the dictated roles of the imposed order of dept-value. It will work through you and without you, following the path of least resistance, but will always carry on with what is possible. It resists authority, ambition, competitiveness, representation, and other “good intentions”. Never completed, it comes with its own demands: Occupy! Resist! Live! Grow! Create!
As “artist as organizer” James Simbouras uses concepts taken from cymatics, the study of the interactions between sound and matter, as a metaphorical framework so as to discuss the relationship of communities to “ephemeral” social art works/situations, and the shifting definitions of art and so-called art economy, emerging out of the urges and the inter-dependencies that is the Athenian context. The presentation is illustrated with material from public interventions, performances, talks and other collective celebrations.
