James Simbouras ^^ Blockchain for the Cultural Commons
The DAAO (Decentralized Autonomous Art Organization), is an evolving social sculpture. A living organism. In simple terms a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) is a censorship-resistant means to coordinate the deployment of shared resources towards a shared set of objectives. It is a network of peers that encode their protocols transparently into the blockchain, and make collaborative decisions by voting through smart contracts. As such, DAO’s represent a potential new artistic medium- and new new tool in the movement of redefining art’s role as a vehicle for transformation and for resisting the effects of the highly centralised and bureaucratized art economy.
The workshop that James will lead in Plato’s Academy is part of an ongoing series of workshops/ community meetings, titled “Blockchain for the Cultural Commons” exploring the potential of DAOs as tools for activism, and of organization outside of the walls of the institutions, and as artworks in their own terms. The goal of the workshops has been to co-design and support the first artistic projects that will leverage blockchain elements in Athens.
James Simbouras is a founding member of C.A.S.A., and part of the DAAO initiative which is the result of a collaboration between of a group of Athenian artists and their comrades in the blockchain space.
